Sugar acts on us like a drug, moreover, an experiment showed that the rat was more addicted to it than to cocaine, that is to say! So how to get out of the habit of sugar, how to feel less and less like it? Erwann Menthéour, sports coach and founder of Fitness, explains why refined sugar has become a real enemy of health

Follow the guide to learn how to eat less sugar, in short, to detoxify yourself!

Do you have cravings, urges, sweet cravings, and would you like to control them better?

You're right because you should know that the more sugar you eat, the more you'll crave it.

First, it's important to understand why you have these cravings. I'll give you a few tips on how to deal with your sweet cravings!

In any case, it is important to keep in mind that refined sugar is nowadays the primary cause of many illnesses related to our lifestyle. Diabetes, rising cholesterol, obesity, lowered immune system, cancers...

Sugar calls sugar

Sugar-calls-sugar

The first thing to know is that our bodies are not designed to eat refined sugars.

When you eat sweet foods, you raise your blood sugar (= blood sugar level) abnormally high. If your blood sugar rises too high, it becomes dangerous.

Your body, this highly sophisticated machine, will then produce a hormone called insulin, which lowers the blood sugar level.

The sweeter you eat, the higher the insulin dose and the lower the blood sugar level will be... The consequence of all this is what is called reactive hypoglycemia: a few hours after eating sweet foods, you will have a fit and a craving, a compulsive craving for sweetness.

So remember this sentence, which I repeat all the time: sugar calls for sugar!

A little reminder: where is the sugar?

In candy, sweets, and cakes, you know that!

In soft drinks alcoholic beverages, fruit juices. That's right because fruit naturally contains sugar, so don't forget it.

In puffed rice cakes, dark chocolate, fruit yogurts, dessert creams, ice creams, breakfast cereals (real sugar bombs!), chocolate powder...

And in a wide range of industrial foods, such as steaks from your fast-food restaurant, sandwich bread, ready-made meals, etc.

An example: in your hamburger, you will find sugar in the composition of the bread, in the sauce (ketchup, sweet mustard, barbecue sauce), and sometimes even in the meat if it does not come from a real butcher.

Top 5 tips to reduce your sugar intake

what-to-eat

As you will have understood, it is important to stay away from refined and processed products.

Weaning will be a difficult journey that will have to be done in stages in order not to "explode" psychologically.

Here are some personal tips to help you get rid of excess sugar consumption:
  • Gradually reduce your intake of simple carbohydrates (soft drinks, sweets, refined cereals).
  • Identify the right intake of complex carbohydrates and fiber (wholegrain cereals, legumes, fruit).
  • Do a detox that will help you enormously in weaning.
  • If you really feel the need, prefer to eat a little sweet product at the end of the meal (a fresh fruit, more filling and less sweet than compote).
  • Sugar substitutes, especially sweeteners. My advice is to stay as far away from them as possible, especially from aspartame, which, despite the claims of some American authorities, is harmful to health.

Runaway from diet products!

If these products contain no or very few calories, they send the same responses as sugar to the body.

They leave the storage doors wide open and maintain the addiction to sweetness.

Make sure you reduce them considerably and if not, opt for natural sweeteners such as stevia or agave syrup.
